Why Blog?

Within my classroom I am hoping to use a blog to gather great teaching thoughts, links, and lessons for my students. My kindergartners are not ready to type their own responses to this blog, but it would also serve as a great communication tool to the parents of these children. This blog will help me become more confident about the technological world of blogging. If I were to move to another grade level then I could definitely use it in my classroom as a way of assessing what my students would retain and apply from a lesson. I certainly believe that students of the 21st century are very advanced in technology and us educators should recognize that as an open doorway to learning.

  1. I love the idea of using the blog as a communication tool for the parents of your students. Perhaps the parents could read the blog to their children and then type a joint response. You might even want to have a weekly topic based on your current lesson. For instance, if you are studying simple measurement, you might ask parents to share a favorite cookie recipe on the blog. Together, the parent and child could make the cookies at home, allowing the child to measure the ingredients under their supervision. If the student then shared the cookies with the class, other students may ask their parents to get the recipe from the blog so that they can make some of their own.

This idea could also be applied to making holiday decorations, creating family trees, or sharing their favorite stories. The list of possibilities is "virtually" endless!
